Environment at MIUT
Since 2008 that MIUT has developed numerous actions to what it concerns to the environment protection and to raise awareness amongst all the key players.
Trail Maintenance
In every MIUT's edition, we contribute to the cleaning of invasive undergrowth on significant parts of the course. Sometimes, our team has to build or rebuild parts that were damaged, either by natural erosion or by the frequent passing of people along the year.
Trail Clean-up
During course-marking and course-demarking our teams have big concern on picking the waste they find along the course, either left by runners either by people that passed by.
Waste reduction
At MIUT, we are committed to reducing waste and promoting sustainability in all aspects of our operations. One way we've taken action is by eliminating plastic cups from our aid stations, reducing the amount of plastic waste we generate.
Additionally, we sort our residual materials to ensure that they are properly recycled or disposed of, further reducing our environmental impact. These measures reflect our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship and reducing our ecological footprint.
Sustainable Transportation
At MIUT, we are committed to promoting sustainable transportation options for our event and operations. Since 2008, we have been offering to all of our participants the option to travel to their starting location by bus. By providing this sustainable transportation option, we have helped reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. We are proud to have made sustainable transportation a key part of our commitment to environmental sustainability.
Carbon Offsetting
At MIUT, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainability in all aspects of our operations. To support this commitment, we have launched our "Planting trees instead of receiving the race shirt" project, which encourages runners to support reforestation efforts in Madeira Island by opting to buy trees to be planted instead of receiving a race t-shirt. By participating in this project, we are not only offsetting our carbon emissions but also contributing to reforestation efforts and biodiversity conservation. We are proud to be taking this important step towards a more sustainable future and hope that our efforts inspire others to do the same.
Sustainable Purchasing
At MIUT, we believe that supporting local businesses is an important part of promoting sustainability in our operations. While there may be limitations on the services and goods supplied in our island, we prioritize local businesses before importing services or goods, whenever possible. By doing so, we not only support our local economy but also reduce the environmental impact associated with transportation and shipping. We are committed to responsible and sustainable purchasing practices and will continue to prioritize local businesses whenever possible.
