– Be aware of the distance and specific characteristics of the race in which they will participate and be sufficiently trained to complete it.

– Have developed, prior to the race, a real capacity for self-sufficiency in the mountains, enabling them to manage the challenges inherent to this type of event, particularly in relation to changing weather conditions (night, wind, cold, fog, rain, or snow), as well as the ability to remain autonomous between two aid stations, not only regarding food and hydration but also clothing and safety.

– Be able to cope with physical and mental challenges resulting from extreme fatigue, digestive issues, joint problems, muscle pain, etc.

– Be fully aware that it is not the organization’s role to assist a participant in overcoming such difficulties, as doing so depends primarily on the participant’s own ability to adapt to problematic situations arising during this type of event.
1.5. External Aid/Personal Assistance
– For participants in the MIUT LEGEND (110k), MIUT ADVANCED (80k), and MIUT DISCOVER (56k) races, external assistance is allowed from one person only. At the Curral das Freiras aid station (for the MIUT LEGEND and MIUT ADVANCED races), that person must present the personal assistance access card. This card will be given to the participant during check-in.

– All other forms of external assistance are strictly prohibited, including professional medical assistance.

– Personal assistance is not permitted for participants in the MIUT MARATHON (40k) and MIUT STARTER (17k) races.

– Any form of external assistance outside the designated and signposted areas is strictly prohibited.

– Personal assistance zones will be located within 20 metres before or after the official checkpoints and mandatory aid stations. These zones will be signposted only and, except for a few specific cases, will not have any protection against adverse weather conditions that may occur during the event. Only drinking water will be available in these zones.

– The checkpoints/aid stations where personal assistance is permitted are indicated in the Checkpoints, Time Barriers, and Control Types Table for each race, available on the event website. Participants who intend to benefit from personal assistance must consult this table and inform their assistants accordingly.
1.6. Race Bib Placement
– The race bib must remain visible at all times during the race. It must be positioned over the clothing, on the chest or abdomen area, and may not, under any circumstances, be attached to the back. The name and logo of the sponsors may not be altered or covered.

– Only participants with a visible bib will be allowed access to the checkpoints/aid stations.

– Failure to comply with these rules will result in the penalty provided for in Article 2.11.
1.7. Rules of Sport Conduct
– The MIUT® – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail® is an event that promotes and values, above all, fair play.

– It is essential that participants assist any person in danger and alert the nearest checkpoint or contact the organization.

– The Organization reserves the right to exclude from the race, even before its start, any participant whose behavior may affect the management and/or proper functioning of the event. In such a case, the athlete will not be entitled to a refund.

– Unsporting conduct will be sanctioned according to its degree of severity, as stipulated in Article 2.11.
2. Event

– The Organization also reserves the right to reduce the number of available entries for safety reasons or for any other reason that may affect the proper functioning of the race. All changes will be announced in advance on the event’s official website and social media channels.

– The MIUT® – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail® takes participants through breathtaking landscapes across eight municipalities of Madeira Island – Porto Moniz, Calheta, Ponta do Sol, São Vicente, Santana, Funchal, Santa Cruz, and Machico – showcasing the island’s unique natural diversity and beauty in every corner.

2.4. Map/Profile/Route description
– The routes of the MIUT® – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail® are mainly composed of paths, trails, footpaths, levadas (irrigation channels), unpaved forest roads, and small sections of asphalt. The routes use public roads, both on- and off-road, pass through towns and villages, and utilize service accesses that go through private properties. The routes will not be closed for the races, so participants must be aware that vehicles, people, and animals may be moving in both directions along the race routes.

– The race routes cross some roads and sometimes intersect them perpendicularly. Crossing these roads requires the utmost attention from participants.

– There will be locations along the routes where gates or barriers may exist, which participants must open and close. Whenever a participant encounters a closed gate or barrier, they must leave it as they found it, i.e., closed.

– The organization will provide GPS tracks of the race routes. However, the on-site signage will always take precedence.

– The organization marks the route with signaling tape (red and white with the MIUT® logo), reflective strips, and vertical signs. It is imperative to follow the marked paths and avoid shortcuts. If participants lose sight of the signage for approximately 500 meters, they must turn back until they find the route markers again. Common sense should prevail.
2.5. Time Limit
– The MIUT® – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail® is an event comprising five single-stage races, each with a set time limit for completion.

– Time cut-offs are calculated to allow participants to reach the finish line within the imposed time limit, already accounting for potential stops (rest, aid stations, etc.). All aid stations will have time cut-offs.

– To be allowed to continue in the race, participants must leave the control point before its closure; otherwise, they will be prevented from proceeding and consequently disqualified.

– Any participant excluded from the race who wishes to continue may only do so by handing in the detachable part of their race bib, proceeding at their own risk and in complete autonomy.

– For reasons of force majeure (weather and/or safety), the organization reserves the right to modify the time cut-offs.
2.6. Timing System
– An electronic timing system will be used. At the control points, there will be an electronic station that records athletes’ passages.

– Participants’ race bibs include a chip, which allows the recording of the athlete’s passage. There will also be a tag to be placed on the participant’s backpack or similar equipment.

– In addition to the electronic timing at the aid stations, there will also be electronic/manual passage recording at security points located at strategic points along the course.

– The start area will be delimited with metal barriers. Participants must enter this area through the locations indicated by the event staff.

– At the start area, the clock will begin counting at the established time, with or without the presence of participants. Participants who are not present within 15 minutes after the start, or who arrive after this period, will be prevented from starting and, consequently, will not be classified.
2.7. Checkpoints
– Check-points are mandatory passage points and are located in areas defined by the organization. Each check-point will have a responsible staff member present.

– Failing to pass one or more check-points will result in the participant’s disqualification.

– During the race, there may be “surprise check-points” to ensure full compliance with the course. Their location will, of course, not be communicated by the organization.

– Withdrawals must be made exclusively at aid stations. In the event of an accident or injury where the participant is immobilized and cannot reach an aid station, they must activate the rescue operation by contacting the organization.

– The organization’s emergency contact number will be printed on the participant’s race bib and should also be saved in advance on the participant’s mobile phone.

– The organization reserves the right to alter the course and the position of check-points/aid stations at any time without prior notice. In cases of severely adverse weather conditions, the start may be delayed by a maximum of two hours, after which the race will be canceled. No refunds will be issued.

– During the race, in the event of bad weather and for safety reasons, the organization reserves the right to modify cut-off times and/or suspend, reduce, neutralize, or stop the race. No refunds will be issued.
2.8. Aid Stations Location
– The aid stations will provide participants with food and drinks to be consumed on-site. Although other drinks may be available at the stations, only water will be supplied for filling participants’ hydration reservoirs or other containers.

– First aid personnel will be positioned at all aid stations. It is essential that participants assist anyone in danger, alert the nearest check-point, and/or contact the organization.

– Participants must comply with the decisions of the specialized medical staff.
2.9. Mandatory Gear / Gear Checks
– At check-in, participants must present the backpack, or similar equipment, that they will use during the race. A label will be attached to this equipment.

– During the competition, all participants must carry all mandatory equipment. At any time during the race, race directors or check-point leaders may verify the equipment. Participants must accept these checks peacefully, without contesting, under penalty of being disqualified from the race, according to the list of penalties in Article 2.11.

– The first five (5) overall athletes, male and female, from all races may be required to present their mandatory equipment after finishing

2.12. Responsibilities Towards the Athlete / Participant
– Participants registered in the MIUT® – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail® agree to participate voluntarily and under their own responsibility in the competition. Consequently, they release, waive, and agree not to claim or demand from the organization, staff, authorities, sponsors, and other participants, or their heirs, any liability beyond the coverage of the responsibilities of the organization, its staff, and participants.

– The organization shall not be held responsible for accidents caused by sudden illness, negligence, or negligent ignorance of rules and regulations, nor for accidents that may occur during travel to the start of the race or after its completion.
2.13. Insurance
– The Organizer contracts a civil liability insurance policy for the duration of the event. This insurance contract aims to guarantee the liability that, under civil law, may be attributed to the Insured as the organizer of the event. This insurance guarantees the minimum coverage of the Organizer’s, staff’s, and participants’ responsibilities, only in the event of an accident occurring during the race.

– Personal accident insurance covers the risk of bodily injury, permanent disability, or death of a participant resulting from an accident occurring during the race (from the moment the participant starts the race until they cross the finish line).

– In the event of an accident, the participant must first contact the organization, which will arrange referral to the medical institution most suitable for their health condition, along with the claim form containing the policy number, stamped and signed by the club (the policyholder). Occasionally, due to the urgency/severity of some accidents, it may be impossible to complete the claim form at the time of the incident. In these circumstances, the claim may be processed after the participant has received first aid.

– A claim must be submitted to the insurer within a maximum of eight business days from the date of the accident. After this period, the insurer reserves the right not to accept the claim.

– Any expense documents related to a reported claim must first be paid by the claimant (participant), and the originals sent to the insurer for later reimbursement.

– The deductible must be paid by the participant to the entity providing hospital services.

– All expenses are paid by the claimant and then reimbursed by the insurer according to the coverage of the insurance (except for the deductible), provided that the insurance claim is properly filed and accepted by the insurer.

– The organization will not assume expenses for claims of which it was not informed in time to activate the insurance. If the participant independently seeks hospital assistance without the organization’s knowledge, the insurance will not be activated, and the participant will be responsible for 100% of the incurred costs.

NOTE: Expenses exceeding the coverage indicated above are the sole responsibility of the claimant. The organization assumes no liability in this regard. The deductible is the responsibility of the claimant (injured participant).
2.14. Course Change
– The Organizer reserves the right to alter or adjust the routes in response to possible difficulties that may arise up to the week of the event, such as denial of access to private areas, sections of the route that are damaged and cannot be restored in time. The Organizer will make every effort to preserve the distances and elevation gains announced before the opening of registrations. Any changes will be announced on the official event website.
2.15. Event/Race Cancellation
