MIUT® – Madeira Island Ultra-Trail® is organised by Clube de Montanha do Funchal (CMOF). The Race Directors and the Jury constitute the highest authority of the event.

1.2. Requirements by Race
For the LEGEND, ADVANCED and DISCOVER distances, athletes must have in their ITRA profile, obtained in a single race, the minimum participation requirements for their registration to be validated.
Participants compete solely at their own responsibility, under a full self-sufficiency regime. Athletes must be capable of independently managing isolation, extreme fatigue and adverse mountain weather conditions. They must therefore ensure adequate preparation, food and clothing autonomy, as well as the ability to navigate and adapt to weather conditions.

* The km-effort value follows ITRA criteria and is calculated by adding the linear distance (1 km = 1 point) to the accumulated positive elevation gain (every 100 m D+ = 1 point).
1.3. Nature of the Course and Movement on Public Roads / Private Property
The MIUT® course is not fully closed to traffic. Participants may encounter vehicles, pedestrians, animals or other users on roads, paths, trails, levadas and other areas of the course. Compliance with traffic rules, as well as the instructions of the authorities and the Organisation, is mandatory at all times.
Participants must respect private property and all structures existing along the course, such as gates, barriers, doors and fences, leaving them in the condition in which they were found. Passage through such private land is permitted only through the locations and corridors defined by the Organisation.
The GPS or cartographic representation of the course is for information purposes only and does not replace the official event markings or the instructions of the Organisation.

1.5. Registration Fees and Places
The total number of places (approximately 3,300) is distributed in the proportion of 80% for direct registration and 20% by lottery. The pre-registration period for the lottery runs from 26 October to 9 November 2026, with the draw taking place on 14 November. Group registrations are not permitted, and athletes suspended for doping offences will not be admitted to the race.
1.6. Payment Methods and Validation
The registration fee must be paid through the Rockthesport platform, using the payment methods made available (Credit or Debit Card), within the deadline stipulated upon submission of the form. Registrations not paid by the deadline automatically expire.
1.7. Registration Cancellation Policy
The athlete has the right to cancel their registration at any time, with the following refunds applying to the base fee (excluding the 3.9% payment platform management fee, which is non-refundable):
– Until 30 November 2026: 85% refund of the registration fee
– From 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2027: 50% refund of the registration fee;
– From 1 February 2027 to 15 March 2027: 30% refund of the registration fee;
– From 16 March 2027 onwards: No refund shall be granted.

Additional Conditions:
– The cancellation request must be formally sent by email to [email protected]. The date on which the email is received shall determine the applicable refund percentage.
– By requesting cancellation of the registration, the athlete immediately and definitively waives the right to the participation kit.

Costs: Changing distance entails payment of an administrative fee of €15.00. If the change is to a higher-priced distance, the athlete must pay the corresponding difference. If the change is to a lower-priced distance, no refund of any excess amount shall be made.

Each athlete may have only one active registration; if they register for a second distance, the amount of the second registration will not be refunded, and they will also lose the right to the corresponding participation kit.

In the event of a pregnancy occurring after registration has been confirmed, and upon presentation of appropriate medical documentation, the participant may exceptionally request that the registration be deferred to the following edition. The request must be made before the race takes place and shall be subject to validation by the Organisation. The operational conditions, any administrative costs and the deadline for submitting the request will be defined and communicated by the Organisation.
1.9. Bib and Sporting Conduct
Bib use: The bib must remain permanently visible on the front of the body (chest or abdomen). It is prohibited to conceal sponsors or to wear it on the back. The bib grants exclusive access to the aid stations.

2. Race Cancellation Due to Force Majeure
In the event of cancellation of a race for safety reasons, official weather alerts or government decisions, the following refunds shall apply:
Until 28 February 2027: Maximum 60% refund.
From 1 to 31 March 2027: Maximum 30% refund.
After 31 March 2027: No refund shall be granted.

3. Personal Accident Sports Insurance
The registration fee includes the Mandatory Sports Insurance taken out by the Organisation for the duration of the event. The insurance covers treatment, emergency assistance, mountain search and rescue expenses up to the statutory limits established in the policy. Damage to personal equipment or repatriation expenses outside the national territory are not covered. Any claim must be formally reported to the Organisation within 24 hours after the event. Although the Organisation provides insurance for all participants, participants are advised to have personal insurance covering trail-running and, when assistance is required, to determine which insurance provides the most advantageous coverage for the expenses arising from the situation.
Before the final publication of the regulations, the following shall be confirmed and, where necessary, reflected in this clause: the insured capital and limits per claim; the medical and hospital expenses covered; assistance, emergency, search and rescue coverage; applicable exclusions; the existence and conditions of coverage outside aid stations; any deductibles; the procedure for reporting a claim; the required documents; the reporting deadline; and the insurer/assistance contacts.

4. Services Included in the Registration and Drop Bags
4.1. Included Equipment and Services:

– Transport to the race start from Machico or Funchal.

4.2. Change-of-Clothes Bags (Drop Bags)
Change bags are provided at check-in and participants wishing to use this service must hand them in at the start area of their distance. They will be handled as follows:
– LEGEND and ADVANCED – the bag is transported to the Curral das Freiras checkpoint (CP) and subsequently forwarded to the finish;
– DISCOVER, MARATHON and STARTER – the bag is sent directly from the start line to the finish.

4.2.1. Responsibility for Drop Bag Contents
Participants should not place poles, money, documents, jewellery, electronic equipment, medication or other high-value items in Drop Bags. The Organisation cannot be held liable for loss, damage, delay or deterioration of valuable or fragile items placed in the bags, without prejudice to any legal liability that may apply to it.
Drop Bags not collected by 12:00 noon on Sunday (25 April) within the defined deadline may be deemed abandoned. Any subsequent request for shipment will be subject to the Organisation’s availability and payment of a €15 fee plus postage, only until 31 May 2027.

5. Solidarity and Travel Bibs
5.1. Solidarity Bibs
MIUT® makes available places associated with 4 partner institutions, with a limit of 5 places per institution. The solidarity bib option guarantees access to the race even if registrations for the requested distance are sold out. To validate participation through this route, the athlete must make a €300.00 donation directly to the selected institution, in addition to paying the event registration fee (using the amount applicable to the first registration phase). The deadline for confirmation of the donation is 31 January 2027. For this purpose, the athlete must contact the Organisation by email at [email protected].

5.2. Travel Bibs
It is possible to secure a bib for MIUT® 2027 even after registrations have sold out, by booking an accommodation package of at least 5 nights through the event’s official travel agency (Intertours Madeira). 20 places are available under this option, with a deadline to join of 28 February 2027.
Interested parties must submit the booking form to the agency, mandatorily entering the code “MIUTBIBTRAVEL2027” in the “Other Information” field. After the accommodation package has been validated and paid for, Intertours Madeira will send the holder’s details to the MIUT® Organisation, which will subsequently send the athlete an official email with the instructions and exclusive link to register for the requested distance.

6. Elite Athletes and Personal Assistance
6.1. Elite Athlete Status
MIUT® offers special registration conditions for elite athletes, based on their ITRA Index, divided into two plans:

6.2. Personal Assistance
Personal assistance is permitted exclusively in the LEGEND, ADVANCED and DISCOVER races, and is limited to the areas designated by the Organisation at official aid stations (up to 20 metres before and after them) and restricted to one assistant per athlete.
At the Curral das Freiras checkpoint (LEGEND/ADVANCED), the assistant must present the access card provided during race check-in.
Any personal assistance is strictly prohibited in the MARATHON and STARTER distances, as is external professional medical support or any type of logistical support to the athlete outside the areas designated for this purpose.

6.2.1. Responsibility of Assistants and Accompanying Persons
Each participant is responsible for the conduct of their assistants, accompanying persons, support team and any other persons accompanying them. Any conduct contrary to these regulations by such persons may be considered an infringement attributable to the participant and may give rise to a penalty, disqualification or other measures determined by the Organisation, according to the seriousness of the situation.
Assistants must fully respect the Organisation’s instructions, the designated assistance areas, traffic rules, protected areas and public or private property along the course.

6.3. Aid and Checkpoints
Aid stations provide a selection of drinks (water, isotonic drink and soft drinks) and solid food (fruit, sweet and savoury products, as well as hot broths at the main stations). MIUT® has a no-disposable-cups policy; therefore each athlete must carry their own cup or liquid container. The detailed list with the exact kilometre of each station and the products to be served will be published on the official page of each distance.

If the athlete is unable to participate in the race and has not cancelled their registration, they may authorise a third party to collect their participation kit. For this purpose, the participant must download, complete and sign the official authorisation form provided by the Organisation. This document must be presented at check-in, accompanied by a copy of the identification document used for registration and the identification of the authorised person.
Alternatively, the Organisation may offer shipment of the participation kit by post, provided that this is requested by the participant by 31 May 2027. Shipment is subject to prior payment of all associated costs (packaging and postage), plus an administrative fee of €15.00. Shipment will be made within a maximum of seven working days after receipt of payment and confirmation of the details.

7.6. Course Marking and Navigation
The course is duly marked by the Organisation using reflective marking tape, directional signs and arrows, all bearing the MIUT® identification. At night, the markings are visible in the light of a headlamp.
If an athlete travels more than 500 metres without seeing any marking, they must stop and immediately return to the last confirmed marked point. Following markings that are not official event markings is prohibited.

7.7. Operation of Time Cut-Offs
In addition to the overall race time limits, intermediate cut-off times are set at all key checkpoints (identified on the official map). The time of departure from the checkpoint determines compliance with the cut-off. Athletes who arrive or attempt to leave after the cut-off time will be disqualified and must hand their bib to the checkpoint chief.
7.7.1. Timing and Passage Control System
MIUT® rankings and times are determined through the Organisation’s official timing system, which may combine electronic reading, manual recording and other control methods. The bib with chip and/or other identification devices used by the Organisation must remain correctly positioned and operational throughout the race.

For reasons of safety, weather conditions, environmental protection, requirements imposed by the authorities, unavailable access routes, incidents on the ground or other circumstances that may affect the normal operation of the race, the Organisation may, at any time before or during the event, change the course, shorten or modify a section, change the location or operation of a checkpoint or aid station, establish an alternative passage or modify cut-off times.
Such changes may be communicated through the official website, email, SMS, social media, briefing, on-course signage, members of the Organisation or other available means, and participants must comply with the Organisation’s most recent instructions.

The Organisation may delay the start, temporarily suspend, neutralise a section, reduce the distance, interrupt or end any race early whenever this is considered necessary to preserve the safety of participants, volunteers, medical teams, residents or other persons, or to comply with instructions from the competent authorities.
In the event of neutralisation or interruption, the Organisation will determine the form of classification and/or validation of results applicable to the specific situation, taking into account the circumstances and the timing information available.

8. Mandatory and Recommended Equipment
The backpack tag will be attached at check-in. Mandatory equipment may be checked randomly at any time during the race, in particular for the first 5 overall male and female finishers in each race.

In the event of adverse weather conditions, the Organisation may activate the cold weather kit, which includes: long-sleeved thermal top, waterproof trousers, hat or buff covering the ears, waterproof gloves.
9. Penalties, Safety and Disqualifications
Infringements committed will be sanctioned by the Race Directorate in accordance with the following table:

9.2. Official Withdrawal Protocol (Abandonment)
Except in the event of serious injury, withdrawal from the race must be formalised at an official checkpoint/aid station or by telephone to the Organisation. If the athlete is at an aid station, the Organisation will provide transport back to Machico, subject to the availability of seats and schedules of the race vehicles. Abandoning the race outside the stations without notifying the Organisation triggers unnecessary search and rescue operations, the costs of which will be charged directly to the athlete.
9.3. Medical Emergency and Evacuation
Medical stations and mountain rescue teams will be distributed along the course. The race doctor has absolute authority to suspend and remove from the race any athlete who is physically incapacitated or suffering from severe hypothermia/dehydration. The costs of rescues resulting from irresponsible conduct or disobedience of the rules will be charged to the participant.
9.4. Environmental Responsibility and Protection of the Madeira Natural Park
MIUT takes place in a protected area of high biological value. It is expressly prohibited to discard waste (gels, packaging, paper) outside the waste areas at aid stations, to make excessive noise or to travel outside marked trails. Failure to comply with these rules entails immediate disqualification.

11. Health / Anti-Doping Policy
Article 1: Introduction
The Athletes for Transparency (AFT) Health Policy is a comprehensive approach to safeguarding athletes’ well-being, ensuring fair competition and maintaining the ethical values of sport. It encompasses various measures to prevent health risks, combat doping, educate athletes and promote the long-term development of individuals within the sporting community.
The AFT Health Policy applies to all participants, but focuses primarily on elite athletes because of their influence on amateur athletes’ practices.

As a condition of participation, each participant agrees to:
1. Provide any medical history, as well as information on the use of regular treatments, medication (prescription or non-prescription) and dietary supplements during the 30 days prior to the start of the competition.
2. Provide all information relating to any anti-doping procedure or sanction, as well as information concerning valid or pending Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) files.
3. Agree to respond to any request for an in-person or remote meeting within 30 days before the start of the competition.
4. Comply with the list of prohibited substances published annually by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
5. Agree to provide all urine and/or blood and/or capillary and/or saliva samples within 30 days before the start and up to 6 hours after the race.
6. The use of the following substances requires rest (not starting the competition) or stopping the competition:
• 30 days before and during: Intravenous iron infusion.
• 7 days before and during: Intravenous infusion, synthetic thyroid hormones (except for medical indication), substance under a TUE (except insulin).
