The wild side of Madeira

MIUT Discover

miut discover
MIUT Discover is a spectacular mid-distance challenge within the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail®, offering the perfect balance between endurance, beauty, and mountain adventure. Covering 60 km with around 3,000 meters of elevation gain, it’s designed for experienced trail runners looking for a demanding yet deeply rewarding course.

The race starts in the picturesque village of Boaventura, leading runners straight into one of Madeira’s most pristine and breathtaking climbs — the legendary Lombo do Urzal. From there, the course traverses rugged ridges, deep valleys, and sections of ancient laurel forest, offering panoramic views that capture the essence of the island’s wild heart.

MIUT Discover combines the raw spirit of long-distance trail running with some of Madeira’s most unforgettable landscapes — a true test of strength, rhythm, and passion for the mountains.
A look at the Race Course
The race begins with a demanding ascent along the historic Vereda do Urzal, one of the main routes connecting the north and south sides of the island. This trail takes athletes from the base of the northern slope to the highest elevations of the central mountain massif, passing through Boca das Torrinhas.

At this point, the route merges with the MIUT LEGEND course, heading toward Pico Ruivo — the highest point on the island and the location of the first aid station — and then continuing on to Pico do Areeiro.

Between Ruivo and Areeiro, every step reveals the wild and majestic side of the mountain.

With the peaks conquered, the second stage of the course begins — still long and mostly downhill — featuring aid stations along the way at Chão da Lagoa, Portela, and Larano, before reaching Boca do Risco.

From there, the trail descends to the Levada do Caniçal, with a final climb to Pico do Facho, offering a stunning panoramic descent overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

At last, the finish line comes into view in the square of Fórum Machico, on the island’s eastern coast.
